Between October 2012 and October 2022, food prices rose 41.5%, while general inflation was around 22.45%. Last year, while inflation closed at 5.75%, the prices of food consumed at home (bought in street markets and supermarkets) rose 13.23%. This trend has continued this year, which will make it harder for inflation to fall.
To debate this topic, Fundação Getulio Vargas’ Brazilian Institute of Economics (FGV IBRE) and the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo are holding a webinar called “The Impacts of Food Price Increases”.
Speakers:
André Braz - FGV IBRE’s consumer price index coordinator
Daniela Campello - political scientist and professor at FGV EBAPE
Silvia Matos - researcher and coordinator of FGV IBRE’s Macro BulletinModerator:
Fernando Canzian - Folha de S. Paulo special reporter
