Academy of Management: Students take part in global management conference in USA
In addition to the presentations and panel discussions, the event gave students the chance to interact with researchers from all over the world and in different areas of research

The Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management (AOM), held last month in Chicago, featured its largest delegation to date from FGV EAESP. Twelve students from the school’s Professional Doctorate in Administration program (DBA) and three professors – Miguel Caldas, Maria José Tonelli and João Lins – participated intensively in the activities. The event brought together some of the world’s most renowned researchers and professionals in the field of administration and management.
One of the participants, FGV EAESP student Lívia Kuga, emphasized the importance of attending such an important event. “At the AOM’s Annual Meeting, we received advice for people who are beginning their doctorate and learned about best practices for publishing in top journals. In addition, the accessibility of big names in academia present at the event was impressive, providing opportunities to interact with renowned experts and absorb knowledge directly from the source,” she said.
She also highlighted the opportunity to bring theory and practice closer together, one of the major gaps identified during the event. “There is still a considerable gap between research and practical implementation. This creates an excellent opportunity for people like us who have experience in the private sector to contribute research suggestions that can really bridge the gap between science and practice,” she said. However, she warned that there is still skepticism about the ability of market professionals to be top-level academic researchers. “It’s up to us to conquer this space, following academic rigor and bringing valuable insights to practice,” she added.
Mariela Fontenelle Assis, a consultant in organizational development with a doctorate in administration, was another active participant in the event. She presented a paper based on her doctoral dissertation, developed together with her advisor, Professor Thomaz Wood Jr. “I’ve been attending the event every year since 2018, when I joined the DBA program. The lessons learned and contacts made at the AOM over the years have been extremely valuable for my career. This year, the exchange of feedback during the presentation of my article was enriching, helping improve the paper for future publication in high-impact journals,” she said.
In addition to the presentations and panel discussions, the event gave DBA students the chance to interact with researchers from all over the world and in different areas of research, broadening their perspectives and enriching their academic work. The 12 FGV EAESP doctoral students attended panels featuring big names such as Jay Barney, David J. Teece, Denise Rousseau and Henry Mintzberg, as well as participating in doctoral consortium sessions, in which they received direct guidance from editors and reviewers of important journals.
Attending the Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management, one of the largest global conferences dedicated to research and practice in management, continues to be an important milestone in the education of doctoral students at FGV EAESP, reflecting the school’s commitment to academic excellence and the integration of theory and practice.
