Center for International Relations hosts the first 2016 session of the Global and Transnational History Seminar

Global and Transnational History Seminar? on Thursday, March 10. One of the co-authors of ?Latin America and the Caribbean: Traditions of Global History?, professor Rafael Marquese, from University of São Paulo (USP), presented the article during the event. Published in partnership with another USP professor, João Paulo Pimenta, the article questions and challenges the innovative character of narratives on the global history or global turn in Humanities. In order to do so, the authors point out scholars and schools of thought that previously constructed global and systemic narratives throughout the 20th century. The meeting also hosted a debate led by Ynaê Lopes dos Santos, School of Social Sciences professor.

In line with the goals of the seminar, the presentation debated the boundaries and extent of supposedly new approaches to writing and conducting research in the Humanities. Narratives that would now be termed ?global? were discovered by the authors in writings about Latin America and the Caribbean since the 1930s, such as the works of Cyril Robert James and Eric Williams, who studied the African slave trade. Brazilian outlooks or influences were also mentioned, such as in reflections on the Dependency Theory, which also presupposes the existence of a global economic system.

The event ended by opening the doors to new partnerships. In addition to announcing the association between ?Connections? and the ?Other Worlds? seminar on Global History, by the Complutense University of Madrid, the works of professor Marquese at USP?s Brazil and the World System Studies Laboratories (Lab-Mundi) will still be featured in actions hosted by the Center for International Relations and the School of Social Sciences (CPDOC).

According to professor Alexandre Moreli, coordinator of the Center, ?a debate as complex and interdisciplinary as the one in ?Connections? can only become stronger and richer with constant cooperation between FGV?s researchers and Brazilian and foreign institutions.?

Click here to view the schedule of upcoming sessions.

The event included the presentation of the article Global History Traditions in Latin America and the Caribbean by one of his co-authors, Professor Rafael Marquese, the University of São Paulo (USP).
