China in focus: FGV professor is selected for academic program in the Asian giant

Evandro Menezes de Carvalho, professor at FGV’s Rio de Janeiro Law School (FGV Direito Rio) and coordinator of the Nucleus for China-Brazil Studies, was selected to join the “Visting Program for Young Sinologists 2018”. The selection process was carried out by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the People’s Republic of China (MOCT) and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), supporting studies about China by scholars from around the world. The project also aims to promote collaboration with Chinese academic, cultural and educational institutions, in addition to business groups, and improve mutual understanding and friendship throughout the international community.

“China has been more than an object of study to me, because the country, its culture, its people, and all things Chinese have become a big part of my life. The more I learn, the more I realize how much we have to gain by establishing a sincere, open and respectful dialog with Chinese wisdom and their way of seeing the world. I hope that my studies and frequent contact with China can be useful for FGV and Direito Rio students, who have shown great interest in studying subjects related to China or Asia since 2016”, said Carvalho.

Carvalho has already participated in the OAS-CSC Program (2012-2014), an initiative of the Chinese government in partnership with the Organization of American States (OAS), and the Young Leaders from Latin America – a program created by President Xi Jinping in 2016.
