Conference debates artificial intelligence governance and regulations in Brazil and EU

Fundação Getulio Vargas’ Rio de Janeiro Law School is holding the “Brazil-European Union Artificial Intelligence Governance and Regulation Conference.” This international event, open to the public, will be livestreamed on FGV’s YouTube channel at midday on February 6.

The objective is to explore challenges and opportunities regarding the governance and regulation of artificial intelligence, at a time when both the European Union and Brazil are preparing legislative proposals to comprehensively regulate AI.

The conference’s speakers will address the latest policy developments in AI, offering their perspectives and highlighting overlaps between AI and key topics such as commerce, data protection and promotion of innovation. There will also be debates in which experts from different countries will analyze how cooperation can be strengthened in the short and medium term.

Luca Belli, a professor at the FGV Rio de Janeiro Law School and the coordinator of its Center for Technology and Society, will moderate the event, alongside the president of EUBrasil, Luigi Gambardella.

The speakers will include Laura Schertel Mendes, a professor at the Brasilia Institute for Public Law (IDP) and director of the Center for Law, Internet and Society (CEDIS); Miriam Wimmer, the director of Brazil’s National Data Protection Agency (ANPD); Professor Eduardo Magrani of the Catholic University of Portugal; and Maria Buzdugan, digital markets counselor as part of the EU Delegation in Brazil.

There will also be presentations by Nina da Hora, a researcher at the FGV Rio de Janeiro Law School’s Center for Technology and Society; Professor Andreia Renda of the European University Institute in Florence; Juha Heikkilä, AI Act counselor as part of the EU Delegation in Brazil; and Claudio Villar, director of AI at Hostelworld Group.

The event will take place live in English. It is being organized in partnership with the EU Delegation in Brazil, EUBrasil and the Catholic University of Lisbon.
