Documentary produced by CPDOC is nominated for the Pierre Verger award

The Pierre Verger award for Ethnography Videos aims at rewarding films, videos and photographs of recognized technical quality, considered examples of anthropological knowledge dissemination.

The documentary Favela Fabril - directed by the professor of the School of Social Sciences (FGV/CPDOC), Mariana Cavalcanti, by Paulo Fontes and Thaís Blank, and produced by the Audiovisual and Documentary Center and the Laboratory for Urban Studies - was nominated for the Pierre Verger award by the Brazilian Anthropological Association (ABA) and it will be shown at the 29th Brazilian Anthropology Meeting, held at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, in Natal, on August 3-6.The Pierre Verger award for Ethnography Videos aims at rewarding films, videos and photographs of recognized technical quality, considered examples of anthropological knowledge dissemination. National and international productions of documentaries and animated videos that address contemporary socio-cultural issues can participate in the contest.Favela Fabril is a medium-length film that builds the path of the old dairy factory CCPL, in the north region of Rio de Janeiro. The factory was built in the 1940s, deactivated in the late 1990s and occupied by hundreds of families in the 2000s. In 2009, the CCPL community was awarded a construction project of a popular condominium which included the demolition of the old plant. The team follows the last months of the occupation and tells the story of that space through the memories of its former residents and workers.About 560 of these popular apartments were recently delivered, funded by the Growth Acceleration Program (PAC).The documentary is also available online on CPDOC's website.Please click here and find out more (in Portuguese).
