Elderly consumers hit hardest by price increases in Brazil

Calculated by the Brazilian Institute of Economics of Fundação Getulio Vargas (IBRE), the Consumer Price Index for the Elderly (CPI-3i), which measures the change in the consumer goods of households composed primarily of individuals aged 60 or older, showed an increase of 2.87% in the fourth quarter of 2015. For the year, the CPI-3i closed at 11.13%. With this result, the indicator ended 2015 above the Consumer Price Index - Brazil (CPI-BR), which was 10.53% for the same period.Compared with the previous quarter, the CPI-3i recorded an increase of 1.64 percentage point, rising from 1.23% to 2.87%. Six of the eight expense categories that comprise the index recorded increases in their variations. The Food group was the main reason for this upward trend, with price variation going from 0.54% to 5.37%. Within this expense category, the item driving this increase was ?vegetables?, which saw a 20.81% rise in the fourth quarter, against a 16.33% drop in the previous quarter.For the full report, in Portuguese, click here.
