Event discusses possible solutions for Brazilian budget reform

Fundação Getulio Vargas’ Sao Paulo School of Economics (FGV EESP), Sao Paulo School of Business Administration (FGV EAESP) and Sao Paulo Law School are holding an event called “Conversation About Our Budget Reform.” This public event will take place at FGV Sao Paulo on September 13, starting at 8:30 a.m., and it will be livestreamed on FGV’s YouTube channel. The meeting will provide an initial discussion of the main problems of the Brazilian budget system and possible solutions.

The opening remarks will be given by Lilian Furquim, dean of FGV EESP; Oscar Vilhena, dean of the FGV Sao Paulo Law School; and Yoshiaki Nakano, senior professor at FGV EESP.

The first discussion will be moderated by Eurico Marcos Diniz de Santi, director of the Center for Fiscal Citizenship, professor at the FGV Sao Paulo Law School and coordinator of FGV’s Nucleus for Fiscal Studies. He has a master’s and doctorate in law from Sao Paulo Catholic University.

The speakers will be Nelson Marconi, professor at FGV and visiting researcher at Harvard; Fatima Cartaxo, who has a doctorate in economic and financial law from the University of Sao Paulo and is doing postdoctoral research in economic and fiscal law together with the University of Lisbon Law School; Andrea Calabi, who has an undergraduate degree and master’s in economics from the University of Sao Paulo, as well as a master’s and doctorate in economics from the University of California, Berkeley; and Paulo Caliendo, who has a master’s in law from Rio Grande do Sul Federal University and a doctorate in tax law from Sao Paulo Catholic University.

The second conversation will be moderated by Nelson Machado, director of the Center for Fiscal Citizenship, former Brazilian social security minister (2005 to 2007), consultant and professor at FGV EESP. The speakers will be Cristina MacDowell, who has a master’s in economics from Pernambuco Federal University and a doctorate in economics from the University of Brasilia; Gilberto Perre, executive secretary of the National Movement of Mayors; Clara Marinho, a planning and budget analyst at the federal government who is doing a doctorate in public administration and government at FGV EAESP; and Manoel Pires, coordinator of the FGV IBRE Fiscal Policy Observatory, researcher at the University of Brasilia and professor at FGV EPPG in Brasilia.
