Event presents program to stimulate public sector research and innovation in mathematics education in Ceará
On November 14, the FGV´s School of Applied Mathematics (FGV EMAp) will hold a seminar titled “Chief Scientist in Basic Education Program in the State of Ceará: Public Research and Innovation in Mathematics Teaching.” The main speaker will be Professor Jorge Lira, of Ceará Federal University. The event will take place at 4 pm in Auditorium 537 in FGV’s main building (Praia de Botafogo, 190, Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro).
During the seminar, the guest speaker will present the main ideas and activities of the Chief Scientist in Basic Education Program, an initiative involving universities, research funding foundations and local education secretariats in the state of Ceará. The program deploys a multidisciplinary team to work on public projects and policies for the teaching of mathematics and science. Lira will show how education assessment results have been used to structure a systemic approach to improve students’ proficiency in mathematics, integrating the curriculum, evaluations, training and structured materials.
Jorge Lira is a professor at Ceará Federal University’s Mathematics Department, where he obtained a PhD in mathematics. He has been a visiting professor at universities including Stanford (United States), Paris Diderot University (France), the Hausdorff Institute (Germany) and the University of Milan (Italy). He coordinates international projects such as CAPES/COFECUB together with French universities, and he is the provost for research and graduate education at Ceará Federal University. He is Ceará’s chief scientist in basic education, coordinating assessment and monitoring projects across the state, and proposing public education policies for the state and the municipalities of Fortaleza and Sobral.
