FGV analyzes political debates on social networks during protests in Brazil

FGV's Public Policy Analysis Division (FGV/Dapp) analyzed the debate on social networks during the protests in Brazil on March 15 and April 12 for an article published in last Friday's edition (April 17) of the Brazilian newspaper Valor Econômico. The monitoring activity on Twitter reported that, on April 12, the hashtag #aceitadilmavez (a hashtag supporting President Dilma) was mentioned more than the hashtag #impeachment, which was the most mentioned hashtag on March 15.Marco Aurélio Ruediger, director of FGV/Dapp, said that networks are working in a different way. It's as if the population that elected the President decided to stop retreating, and that it could no longer lose ground. The director, comparing this year's demonstrations of March 15 and April 12 with protests of June 2013, stated that the political environment is learning how to deal with social networks. In his opinion, the debate over the networks, which two years ago was moderated by society, started following the agenda set by institutions. For more information, please visit Dapp?s website (in Portuguese).
