FGV and University of Chicago hold debate on importance of constitutional rights

Fundação Getulio Vargas’ Sao Paulo Law School and Rio de Janeiro Law School, in partnership with the University of Chicago, are holding the Law and Economics Forum, a series of free, online talks, to introduce the audience to the latest studies on legal and political issues. On September 15 and 17, the subject will be the importance of constitutional rights. The meetings will begin at 5 pm.

In the first talk, on Tuesday, September 15, Professor Adam Chilton will explore whether governments genuinely respect rights just because they are included in a constitution. He will present case studies from across the world to show the extent to which constitutions tend to improve the protection of rights. There will also be a discussion about how to empirically respond to this topic and what techniques can be used to bring together the best available evidence on the subject.

On Thursday, September 17, Professor Thomaz Pereira of the FGV Rio de Janeiro Law School will talk about the same theme, discussing constitutional rights and how they work within constitutional systems in which the law aims to legitimize and restrict the exercise of public power, as well as the source of legitimacy of constitutional law and the function of constitutional courts, which vary from system to system.
