FGV Art holds course on the thoughts of Aby Warburg

FGV Art, a space for artistic experimentation and research at Fundação Getulio Vargas, is hosting a mini-course on the thoughts of art historian Aby Warburg, taught by Argentinian professor Hernán Ulm. The course, titled “Image, memory, montage: Warburg and the anthropology of the visible,” will be free of charge. It will take place on January 29, 30 and 31 in FGV’s main building in Rio de Janeiro. The moderator will be Professor Tadeu Capistrano of Rio de Janeiro Federal University. The course is being coordinated by the curator of FGV Art, Paulo Herkenhoff.

Aby Warburg was a German thinker of huge importance to the history of art. His contribution to understanding the status of images as documents of collective and anachronistic memory goes back to what we can recognize as an anthropology of the visible. Starting from the field of the study of images, at the beginning of the 20th century, the classes will investigate the context of Warburg’s exploratory approach, carried out between philosophy and art history, highlighting his main contributions to esthetics, philosophy and anthropology.

Hernán Ulm is a professor of esthetics and philosophy at the National University of the Arts and the University of Salta in Argentina. The author of many publications on the relationship between images, media and contemporary art, he recently wrote the highly regarded book “Rituales de la percepción: artes, técnicas, políticas” (National University of the Arts publishing house, 2021).

The course is part of the academic program organized by FGV Art, which consists of free courses, seminars and training activities held throughout the year. To apply, please fill out our application form. Please note that participation is subject to confirmation by the organizers.
