FGV completes On Legal AI research project, regarding use of artificial intelligence in law
The book by Walker, who has more than 25 years of experience leading projects in this area, examines various ways of applying artificial intelligence to the legal market.
The Center for Education and Research in Innovation (CEPI) at Fundação Getulio Vargas’ Sao Paulo Law School has completed its “On Legal AI” project, which involved coordinating a Brazilian edition of the book of the same name, written by Joshua Walker, co-founder of the Stanford Center for Legal Informatics (known as CodeX) and Lex Machina, a company that has pioneered the large-scale legal application of artificial intelligence.
The book by Walker, who has more than 25 years of experience leading projects in this area, examines various ways of applying artificial intelligence to the legal market, presenting information about real applications of AI in law and how it has helped improve access to justice and legal services as a whole.
Coordinated by FGV Sao Paulo Law School professors Marina Feferbaum and Alexandre Pacheco, as well as researchers Ana Carolina Rodrigues and Alexandre Zavaglia, the Brazilian edition of the book was funded by law firms Mattos Filho, Pinheiro Neto, Urbano Vitalino, Peixoto&Cury, PG Advogados and Finocchio&Ustra. It was also supported by the Association of Lawyers of Sao Paulo (AASP), the Institute of Lawyers of Sao Paulo (IASP), the Lawyer Associations’ Study Center (CESA), and IASP’s Law, Innovation and Technology Commission.
The project ended with an in-person event attended by Joshua Walker on March 14. This event, initially scheduled for 2020, was postponed because of the pandemic. In 2021, in-person events were not possible, but Walker took part in a webinar held by the FGV Sao Paulo Law School with the project’s partners.
