FGV CPDOC begins selection process for digital humanities and data science scholarships

Fundação Getulio Vargas’ School of Social Sciences (FGV CPDOC) has launched a selection process to award scholarships for the last stage of its “Data Science in the Social Sciences Project,” part of the Program to Internationalize Brazilian Graduate Studies, funded by the Education Ministry’s graduate education initiative, CAPES-PrInt. The project aims to expand computational approaches to data analysis in the social sciences and history, as well as promoting innovation in education and digital humanities projects.

Three calls for applications for international mobility scholarships have been launched, all with an application deadline of January 14, 2024. One CPDOC postdoctoral research scholarship is on offer to candidates with academic experience abroad and there are two CPDOC scholarships available abroad for professors with doctorates and doctoral students.

In the project’s first five years (from 2019 to 2023), partnerships were formed with 17 foreign institutions in 11 countries and 34 international mobility scholarships were awarded (26 from Brazil to other countries and eight from other countries to Brazil).

In its last year (2024), the project seeks to consolidate the practice of collaboration between data science and the humanities at FGV CPDOC and to contribute to the training of professionals with analytical skills, combining quantitative, qualitative and computational methods applied to social and historical research.

Text documents, photographs, 3D models, audio and video are relevant sources for social research and we therefore welcome proposals that involve text mining and corpora studies, artificial intelligence and machine learning, GIS and spatial analysis, databases for historical research, digital collections encompassing galleries, libraries, archives and museums, and digital literacy, among other methodologies, data sources and approaches.
