FGV CPDOC’s 50th anniversary: school holds series of talks to celebrate date
The first three are scheduled for March 6, 7 and 8.

Fundação Getulio Vargas’ School of Social Sciences (FGV CPDOC) is celebrating its 50th anniversary. To mark the date, the school is launching a series of 50 events to take place in 2023. The first three are scheduled for March 6, 7 and 8. They will be held in person at FGV. Take a look at the schedule:
March 6 – Beyond the Canon: The Book, A Project
A seminar called “Beyond the Canon: The Book, A Project” will be held on March 6, from 3 pm to 6 pm. In 2022, a collection of papers by 16 authors, mostly little known in Brazil and translated into Portuguese for the first time, was published. The book, called “Além do Cânone: para ampliar e diversificar as Ciências Sociais” (“Beyond the Canon: Expanding and Diversifying the Social Sciences”), was organized by Celso Castro, the dean of FGV CPDOC. The book and the broader project of which it is part will be debated by him, together with Fernanda Alcântara (who has a doctorate in social sciences from the University Research Institute of Rio de Janeiro), Dirceu Marroquim (who has a doctorate in social history from the University of Sao Paulo), Amurabi Oliveira (a professor in the Sociology and Politics Department at Santa Catarina Federal University). The group will reflect on the construction of a broader and more diverse view of this scientific field.

March 7 – Memory of Social Sciences: Assessment and Prospects
This event, to be held on March 7, from 3 pm to 6 pm, will reflect on the Memory of Social Sciences Project, which involves a vast collection of filmed interviews with social scientists, all available to the public. In addition to Brazil, the project includes materials from other Portuguese-speaking countries, such as Portugal and Mozambique, and it has so far recorded around 330 hours of interviews with 150 social scientists. In 2021, Celso Castro received an ANPOCS Award for Scientific Dissemination in Social Sciences for his work as the coordinator of this project, which is constantly updated. The seminar will be moderated by the dean of FGV CPDOC, Celso Castro. The speakers will be Amurabi Oliveira (UFSC), Dirceu Marroquim (USP) and Lígia Ferro (Porto University).

March 8 – Organization of Gilberto Velho Archives and 50th Anniversary of Launch of The Urban Utopia
On March 8, there will be a seminar to celebrate two things: the organization of the archives of anthropologist Gilberto Velho, donated to FGV CPDOC; and the 50th anniversary of the publication of his pioneering book, “A Utopia Urbana” (“The Urban Utopia”). There will be two panel discussions. The first, beginning at 2 pm, will look at the method used to organize these archives, which document part of the researcher’s trajectory. The moderator will be Silvia Monnerat and the speakers will be Silvia Monnerat (FGV CPDOC), Yvonne Maggie (UFRJ), Luiz Fernando Duarte (UFRJ) and Lígia Ferro. The second panel discussion, starting at 4 pm, will discuss the book and the context of the emergence of urban anthropology in Brazil. The moderator will be Sílvia Monnerat and the speakers will be Ruben Oliven (UFRGS), Heitor Frugoli (USP) and José Guilherme Magnani (USP).
