FGV hosts prominent think tank conference in Brazil

On November 5, 6 and 7, FGV hosted an important dialogue on global governance in the 21st century. Held for the first time in Brazil, the 14th Regional Conference of the Council of Councils (CoC) brought together representatives of 30 influential global think tanks to debate issues that will drive international relations in the coming years. The event’s opening ceremony was attended by the president of FGV, Carlos Ivan Simonsen Leal, as well as by Brazilian Foreign Ministry officials, led by Ricardo Monteiro, Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira’s chief of staff, who shared the current administration’s foreign policy visions and perspectives.

The Council of Councils is a forum for high-quality dialogue and consensus building. Its members include the world’s leading foreign policy think tanks and it aims to inform debate in different countries on current and relevant global governance issues. In this edition of the Council of Councils’ Regional Conference, renowned researchers from around the world discussed the repercussions of current geopolitical conflicts, the economic and social impacts of “re-globalization,” including changes in global value chains, the impacts of the energy transition on global geopolitics, possible governance parameters for outer space, Latin America’s position in relation to regional and global trade treaties, and the advancement of artificial intelligence regulation.

Despite being an event restricted to participating members, FGV’s International Affairs Division (FGV DINT), which coordinated it in partnership with the Council on Foreign Relations, also invited some of Latin America’s leading think tanks to the conference, in order to bring a high-quality regional perspective to international discussions. It also organized a closing session open to the public, titled “The Future of the World Order: Perspectives from the BRICS, the West, and Beyond.” This debate allowed interaction between the invited experts, students, diplomatic representatives and other interested parties.

A recording of this public session can be viewed on FGV’s YouTube channel here.
