FGV launches free online course on “Introduction to Data Science”
Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV) is offering a new free education option during the ongoing social distancing period. FGV Executive Education has just launched an online course called “Introduction to Data Science” – currently a key area of growth in the job market.
The course is designed to present data science to professionals in related technology areas who are interested in learning a little more about this new and promising career. It is also aimed at university students who want to know about the main stages and applications in the topical area of big data.
Data science is a multidisciplinary branch of science, which involves computing techniques, applied mathematics, artificial intelligence, statistics and optimization, with the aim of solving analytically complex problems using large data sets.
Jorge Poco, the course’s coordinator and a professor at Fundação Getulio Vargas’ School of Applied Mathematics (FGV EMAp), explains that the classes may be taken by people who do not have deep knowledge of programming, mathematics or statistics.
“We designed the modules to present an overview of data science. Undergraduate and graduate courses in this field are multiplying at universities around the world. Our course will present key concepts, real case studies and different applications. Data science is present in the management of large companies, banks and even measures to tackle the coronavirus,” he says, adding that FGV EMAp’s first data science undergraduate course will begin before the middle of this year.
The 60-hour “Introduction to Data Science” course is free of charge and it takes place entirely online. There is no selection process. The classes are based on a suggested bibliography in English, setting out up-to-date data science content. Some of this material is freely accessible, but some items are of restricted access, and in these cases participants have to pay for the copyright fees of the works that support their studies.
FGV also offers its students numerous video lessons recorded in the institution’s studio, including commented exercises and suggestions of other multimedia materials related to the subject. At the end of the course’s six modules, students will be able to take a test consisting of 10 questions, and if they score at least 70%, they will be entitled to print out a certificate of participation.
