FGV publishes teaching case under its own brand in Harvard Business Publishing database
Fundação Getulio Vargas has just published a teaching case under its own brand in the prestigious Harvard Business Publishing (HBP) database. The case, titled “StoneCo Post-COVID-19 Pandemic: (Too) Fast and (Too) Furious?” was written by Professor Gilberto Sarfati, coordinator of the Professional Master’s in Management for Competitiveness Program (MPGC) at the Sao Paulo School of Business Administration (FGV EAESP) and academic coordinator of FGV Executive Education’s Senior Management Programs. This achievement was made possible through the participation of FGV EAESP in the Cladea Balas Case Consortium (CBCC).
Harvard Business Publishing is one of the most renowned databases in the academic world, recognized for its rigorous curation and dissemination of case studies used by educational institutions and global companies. Its content is utilized by professors, students and professionals to illustrate business practices and strategic decisions in real contexts, making it an essential resource for training leaders and managers.
The teaching case in question examines the trajectory of Brazilian fintech StoneCo, which entered the market in 2014 with a focus on payment solutions for small and medium-sized enterprises. In 2018, it held the largest ever initial public offering by a Brazilian company on Nasdaq. However, StoneCo’s fast growth ran into obstacles in 2020 and 2021, when its credit operations expanded rapidly during the COVID-19 pandemic. With weak financial guarantees and a volatile external context, the company struggled. The case questions whether the company’s strategy was moving too fast and explores the role of its board of directors in guiding this expansion.
According to Professor Sarfati, the teaching case was first discussed in 2022 at a Young Presidents’ Organization seminar and underwent several adjustments until it reached the necessary rigor to be accepted by HBP. “Soon, many other cases involving large Brazilian companies will be accessible to students around the world through FGV EAESP’s participation in the CBCC consortium,” he says.
The inclusion of this case in the HBP database is an important milestone for FGV, strengthening the institution as an international leader in the production of academic knowledge. Through CBCC, which has a partnership with HBP, cases about challenges faced by Ibero-American companies are gaining global prominence and being used in classrooms around the world. In addition, this advance reflects FGV’s growing importance in the global academic community and highlights its commitment to producing studies that connect theory to business practice, now endorsed by one of the world’s most respected academic institutions.
