FGV stands out at programming marathon in Santa Catarina
The group was made up of four students on the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Course at Fundação Getulio Vargas’ School of Applied Mathematics (FGV EMAp).

On October 21, the National Finals of the SBC Programming Marathon were held in the city of Chapecó, Santa Catarina. During the event, a team called “In Search of the Inexplicable AC” represented FGV and came 32nd out of the Brazilian teams and 76th out of all the Latin American teams.
The group was made up of four students on the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Course at Fundação Getulio Vargas’ School of Applied Mathematics (FGV EMAp). Anderson Falcão (first year), Gabriel Pastori Figueira (third year) and Luís Felipe Marques (second year) were tutored by Professor Lucas Pavanelli, who has a master’s degree in computer science and is a former marathon competitor.
The SBC Programming Marathon has been held by the Brazilian Computing Society (SBC) since 1996. It grew out of the regional qualifying competitions for the world stages of the International Collegiate Programming Contest and is part of the event’s South American region.
This year’s National Finals also served as a heat for the “Programmers of America” competition, designed to identify the best teams from all over Latin America. In Brazil, the teams that solved at least six problems in the National Finals were classified. The FGV team solved five, achieving the best performance out of all the teams from institutions taking part in the National Finals for the first time in this edition, which was the case with FGV.
During the event, the winners of the Brazilian Informatics Olympiad, also organized by SBC with the support of Campinas State University, were also announced. In this edition, Anderson Falcão, a member of FGV EMAp’s finalist team in the marathon, was awarded a bronze medal at Senior level, aimed at first-year undergraduate students.
