FGV Students’ Research on Economic Development Gains Recognition at WiDS 2024 Conference

Fernanda Izepe and Pamela Santos, students of the Professional Master's in Finance and Economics at the São Paulo School of Economics (FGV EESP), will have their Master's theses presented during the Women in Data Science (WiDS) Worldwide 2024. The global conference will bring together women data scientists from around the world and will take place on August 27th in São Paulo.

The in-person event will be conducted exclusively by women but will be open to all.

Graduate Students' Research

With the research titled "Customer Micro-Segmentation of a Brazilian Financial Institution for Profitability Analysis," supervised by Professor Elia Matsumoto (FGV EESP), student Fernanda Izepe conducted the micro-segmentation of a sample of customers from a large Brazilian financial institution. The goal was to identify small groups with distinct profiles that could be targeted for campaigns aimed at increasing profitability.

"To conduct this study, I selected, pre-processed the data, and applied clustering techniques from unsupervised learning, a field of AI. As a result, it was possible to identify small groups, which together account for 17.34% of the customer base, that can be targeted for different actions, indicating a potential positive impact on the use of the model in the institution's retention and profitability strategies. I was very happy that my work was selected for WiDS, especially since it is an event focused on a female audience in Data Science. I believe that women bring unique experiences and different approaches to complex problems, contributing to the creation of more inclusive and representative models. Increasing female representation in data science not only enriches the discipline but also serves as an inspiration for future generations of women aspiring to careers in technology and research," adds Fernanda.

Student Pamela dos Santos conducted the research "The Importance of Fintechs in Financial Inclusion - Natura&Co Case Study," also supervised by Professor Elia Matsumoto and co-supervised by Professor Adriana Bessa, a professor at FGV EESP in the Master’s Postgraduate courses. In her research, Pamela analyzed the importance of financial inclusion in people's quality of life and economic development. The objective of this study is to analyze the relevance of fintechs in this inclusion process, and to support this research, a case study was conducted with data from Natura &Co, which in 2021 founded the fintech Emana Pay to serve its Consultants.

"In this study, we analyzed whether there is an increase in the income of the Consultants when they start using the digital account and its financial tools. I was happy and honored to have my work selected because the topic of financial inclusion is highly relevant to everyone's life. Access to a bank account or credit can mean the possibility of improving quality of life, achieving milestones, paying for education, or simply better managing personal finances. Analyzing how fintechs can support this process is to contribute to the promotion of new actions in this direction," says Pamela.
