Fundação Getulio Vargas’ Center for the Development of Mathematics and Science (FGV CDMC) is holding the FGV Talent Selection Meeting between December 8 and 10. The event will take place at Hotel Retiro das Rosas in Cachoeira do Campo, Ouro Preto, in the state of Minas Gerais. The goal is to encourage and promote the study of mathematics and increase FGV’s integration with top-performing students in mathematics and related areas. 

The project is aimed at top-performing first and second-grade students at public sector high schools and medal winners in the Brazilian Public School Mathematics Olympiad. During the event, there will be interactive mathematics experimentation workshops, mini courses featuring oral presentations and practical exercises, talks, and thematic discussions.

The meeting will be taught by professors from Fundação Getulio Vargas and the federal universities of São João Del Rei, Viçosa and Ouro Preto, as well as public school teachers from towns close to Ouro Preto.

The Center for the Development of Mathematics and Science (FGV CDMC) was created by FGV to identify talented young people at government schools across the country (especially non-selective ones) with a strong aptitude for mathematics and offer them the possibility of taking FGV’s undergraduate and graduate courses in Rio de Janeiro, in order to enrich the pool of professionals with advanced qualifications that the country needs.

The center also aims to identify non-selective public schools of excellence, which stand out in Education Ministry rankings and in the Knowledge Olympiads, in order to help train their teachers, improve their management and prepare their students. It also promotes the dissemination of mathematics and science through physical books, e-books, videos, classes, lectures and exhibitions, which use simple language to bring these subjects closer to the general public, especially schoolchildren.
