FGV's Brazilian Institute of Economics (IBRE) is holding today, September 2, the III IBRE Infrastructure Seminar: bottlenecks and solutions to the Brazilian transport infrastructure, with the presence of director Luiz Guilherme Schymura and live broadcast over the internet until 6 pm.The objective is to discuss the obstacles in the sector and present studies that may show ways to revert the current scenario of the country, keeping in mind that, from 2007 to 2012, Brazil invested, on average, 2% of its GDP in infrastructure. In addition, it is ranked in the 107th position in terms of infrastructure quality in the 2012 list of the Global Competitiveness Report (GCR), which evaluated 144 countries.   According to IBRE's coordinator of Applied Economics, Armando Castelar, the lack of infrastructure in the transport sector is critical. It can also be said that it is the area in which there are more investment opportunities. He further states that the challenge is to understand and tackle the barriers that limit the expansion of the transport sector - such as problems in regulation, mismanagement and concessions delays.   At the event, thematic studies on financing, private and public investments, environment, regulation, logistics and foreign trade in Latin America will be presented, as well as sectoral studies on highways, railways, waterways, ports and airports.   Schymura and the researcher of the Applied Economics department of the institute, Regis Bonelli, will be the moderators of the debate.   FGV's Regulation Center coordinator, Joísa Dutra, is also participating in the event next to representatives of the Institute for Applied Economic Research (IPEA, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and other institutions of Rio de Janeiro.   To view the event's complete program, please click here.
