The new premises of Fundação Getulio Vargas' main offices in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, have just obtained the Habite-se - a certificate of the city government which authorizes the operation of buildings that meet the pre-requisites required by the city administration. The document was issued last Friday, November 1st, and concerns FGV's architectural complex, designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer in the 1950s.In addition to Habite-se, the new FGV facilities are about to receive the LEED certification - scoring system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) which measures the environmental performance of design, construction and maintenance of buildings. Sustainability has always been a concern. We followed several standards, such as the reuse of water, the acquisition of materials located in the surroundings of the worksite (avoiding emission of CO2), central air-conditioning system with high energy efficiency, more rigorous fire protection, handling materials that produce little dust during the building work, besides covering the tower with special double glazing, which decreases the incidence of heat inside the building, explains FGV's director of Operations, Mario Rocha Souza. The complex will be inaugurated on December 16th and includes a tower of 19 floors, a terrace and a cultural center with a library, a study area and auditoriums. The cultural center will be administered by FGV and will be completed in the first half of 2014.Please click here to learn more about the Oscar Niemeyer Tower (in Portuguese).
