Global study analyzes teaching innovation policies at higher education institutions
Earlier this month, Fundação Getulio Vargas’ Educational Innovation Hub (FGV HIP) launched a study titled “Teaching Innovation Policies in Higher Education Around the World,” about the role of higher education institutions in encouraging teaching innovation. The study, authored by Marina Feferbaum, Clio Radomysler, Tatiane Guimarães, Larissa Margarido and Cristina Nacif Alves, sought to map policies aimed at improving teaching and educational innovations implemented by higher education institutions around the world, analyze differences and similarities between them, and identify notable strategies that could serve as models for other institutions.
The study thus provides a comprehensive overview of teaching innovation policies in higher education. It highlights the importance of having an explicit institutional positioning, supporting faculty members’ development and building spaces for sharing information, as well as paying attention to the sustainability of initiatives and adapting to local needs. Although there are considerable challenges, the opportunities for promoting teaching innovation are vast and higher education institutions that manage to navigate these complexities will be well placed to offer a high-quality and relevant education in the 21st century.
When taking a broad look at teaching innovations at 30 higher education institutions around the world, the researchers identified that this subject can be viewed from three different perspectives: institutional, professional and community. Accordingly, they created a “Teaching Innovation Triangle” framework, with the aim of contributing to understanding of the different institutional dimensions needed to create an environment that fosters teaching innovation at a higher education institution.
