On March 24, the Deputy Director of the Public Policy Analysis Division (DAPP/FGV), Professor Rogério Sobreira, was invited by the General Secretariat of the State of Rio Grande do Sul to deliver a lecture on the economy of Rio Grande do Sul, in Porto Alegre. The lecture presented the major progresses observed in the state's economy over the past three years, emphasizing not only the strong growth of the GDP in the same period, but also that this growth did not occur only in the agricultural sector, indicating that there are already signs of change in the economic scenario of Rio Grande do Sul.With the presence of Governor Tarso Genro, the major projects implemented in Rio Grande do Sul's industry in the period and their impact on economic growth of the state were analyzed. Sobreira talked about the central topics of this policy and showed data regarding the social perception of the development of Rio Grande do Sul with information extracted from surveys conducted by DAPP.Rio Grande do Sul has a development system, an ecology that coordinates and unifies state policies aimed at the recovery of economic development. This element is very important because it makes policies more effective. Along with the policies comes the clear attempt of the State to modify the economic outlook, which already produces results, and the economy shows signs of diversification in its industrial structure, which do not rely on agriculture for their performance, analyzed Sobreira.Still according to the professor, the service sector is more technology-based. This policy is inclusive, employment and income levels have increased, and the growth does not only satisfy the industrial and service sectors, but it has also produced concrete results for the population in the form of an increase in formal employment, incomes, real income of the value of the worker, and the unemployment rate has dropped significantly. These are key elements of this policy with a philosophy that articulates the government's actions. Without it, the policies would lose efficiency, he said. The event was also attended by the Secretaries Vinicius Wu (Government's General Office), Mauro Knijnik (Development and Investment Promotion Office/SDPI), Cleber Prodanov (Office for Science, Innovation and Technological Development/SCIT) and Odir Tonollier (Finance State Office/Sefaz), the President of the Rio Grande do Sul's Agency for Development and Investment Promotion (AGDI), Ivan de Pellegrin, the president of Fundação de Economia e Estatística (FEE), Adalmir Marquetti, besides state legislators, journalists, entrepreneurs and the federation of workers.
