IGC 2019: FGV obtains maximum score and leads Education Ministry’s national course ranking
FGV holds top three slots in national ranking, with FGV EPGE in first place, followed by FGV CPDOC and FGV EESP. FGV’s other schools – FGV EBAPE, FGV Sao Paulo Law School, FGV EMAp, FGV Rio de Janeiro Law School and FGV EAESP – also received the maximum score.

Fundação Getulio Vargas took the top three positions in the 2019 General Course Index (IGC): the Brazilian School of Economics and Finance (FGV EPGE), School of Social Sciences (FGV CPDOC) and Sao Paulo School of Economics (FGV EESP). All the other FGV schools assessed in 2019 received the top score of 5: FGV EAESP, FGV EBAPE, FGV Rio de Janeiro Law School, FGV Sao Paulo Law School and FGV EMAp. The 2019 results were released on Friday, April 23 by the Education Ministry’s National Institute for Educational Studies and Research (INEP).
Of the Education Ministry’s 13 evaluations, this is the ninth year in which FGV EPGE has obtained the highest score out of all Brazil’s higher education institutions covered by this indicator. The school’s average cumulative score is now 4.85 out of 5.
Of the 2,070 universities covered by IGC 2019, only 46 (2%) received a score of 5. Out of all the institutions that participated in this edition, 87.1% (1,801) are private and 12.9% (269) are public. The majority (73.1%) are colleges, followed by university centers (15.6%), universities (9.4%) and IFES (1.9%).
Every year, the Education Ministry compiles IGC, an instrument based on the weighted average of the scores of each institution’s undergraduate and graduate courses. In this way, it is possible to distinguish the overall quality of the institutions, including undergraduate and graduate studies.
FGV’s provost, Antonio Freitas, celebrated the results: “They represent the synergies and joint efforts of researchers, students and employees, who have maintained FGV as a national leader, conducting internationally significant teaching and research activities. Thus, FGV is competing closely with the world’s foremost institutions,” he said.
Founded in December 1944, FGV is one of Brazil’s and the world’s leading centers of education and research, producing cutting-edge knowledge. FGV is the world’s third best think tank, according to the University of Pennsylvania’s 2020 Global Go To Think Tanks Index Report.
FGV has its own undergraduate teaching centers in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Brasília. In Sao Paulo, it runs courses in Public and Business Administration, Economics, International Relations and Law. In Rio, it offers courses in Economics, Administration, Law, the Social Sciences, Applied Mathematics and Data Science. In Brasília, it has a Public Administration course.
