International event in partnership with Superior Electoral Court explores electoral challenges

The Superior Electoral Court and Fundação Getulio Vargas’s School of Communication, Media and Information (FGV ECMI) are holding an international seminar called “Artificial Intelligence, Democracy and Elections,” which will bring together court justices, public officials, social media representatives, academics, and experts from Brazil and other countries. This public event will take place on May 21 and 22, starting at 9 a.m., in Brasilia. The president of the Superior Electoral Court, Justice Alexandre de Moraes, and its next president, Cármen Lúcia Antunes Rocha, who will be taking over in June, will talk about the impacts of artificial intelligence on elections and challenges facing democracy in the 21st century.

The seminar, which has the support of the European Union Delegation in Brazil, the Superior Electoral Court’s Electoral Judicial School and the Brazilian Federation of Banks, will debate the effect of fake news on the electoral process and the influence that disinformation may have on voting.

In addition, the event seeks to foster the exchange of experiences and understanding of ethical, political and social considerations involving artificial intelligence, listening to partners such as Democracy Reporting International, fact-checking organization Lupa, the FGV Rio de Janeiro Law School and the German Embassy in Brasilia.

At the event, the Superior Electoral Court’s president and justices, specialists and public officials will evaluate and discuss strategies for dealing with the phenomenon of disinformation in the electoral sphere. In addition to justices Alexandre de Moraes and Cármen Lúcia Antunes Rocha, the speakers will include the head of the court’s Judicial Administrative Department, Raul Araújo, and justices Isabel Gallotti, Edilene Lôbo, Nunes Marques, André Ramos Tavares and Floriano de Azevedo Marques.

The guests will also include Marco Ruediger, sociologist and dean of FGV ECMI; Marian Schuegraf, the EU ambassador to Brazil; Kevin Casas-Zamora, secretary-general of International IDEA; Lilian Cintra de Melo, digital rights secretary at the Ministry for Justice and Public Security; and Dragos Tudorache, a member of the European Parliament and co-rapporteur of the IA Act.
