International guest talks about insect control strategies using sterile insects
The sterile insect technique (SIT) is a method of biological insect control used in various parts of the world to control disease vectors such as mosquitoes and pests like fruit flies. To minimize the risk of failure and evaluate different strategies, mathematical modeling and simulations may be of great help. To discuss this subject, the FGV´s School of Applied Mathematics (FGV EMAp) will host a talk titled “Control strategies using the sterile insect technique” on November 28, at 4 pm. The event will take place in Auditorium 537 in FGV’s main building (Praia de Botafogo, 190, Rio de Janeiro).
During the talk, Yves Dumont of the French Agricultural Research Center for International Development (CIRAD) will present an entomological model structured by sex, besides showing some analytical results. He will discuss several SIT control strategies, as well as numerical simulations of theoretical results.
Dumont is a senior researcher at CIRAD and extraordinary professor and co-principal investigator in the SarChi Chair – M3B2 at the University of Pretoria. He is an applied mathematician who works with mathematical modeling in the biological sciences using ordinary differential equations, impulsive differential equations and partial differential equations. His research focuses on phenomena such as plant-insect interactions and human and crop diseases. He has been involved in many projects linked to countries such as South Africa, Cameroon, Indonesia and Réunion Island.
