Fundação Getulio Vargas, through its Center for Science Applied to Public Security (FGV CCAS), in partnership with the University of Chicago and Rio de Janeiro Federal University, is holding an “International Seminar on Criminal Governance.” The event will take place on June 30, at 9:30 am, in hybrid format, in FGV’s main building (Praia de Botafogo, 190, Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro) and livestreamed on FGV’s YouTube channel.

Professors and researchers at Brazilian universities and research centers, as well as foreign guests, will discuss cases in order to aid thinking about strategies to minimize the influence of armed criminal groups in Latin American countries.

There will be talks and discussions to analyze the activities of criminal groups in countries such as Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, Mexico and El Salvador. The participants will look at projects involving criminal ethics, protection rackets, the sale of illicit goods, extortion practices, conflict regulation and the imposition of rules of conduct.

The speakers will be Joana Monteiro, the coordinator of FGV CCAS; Romain Le Cour Grandmaison of Sorbonne / México Evalua); Jania de Aquino of Ceará Federal University; Carlos Schmidt-Padilla of the Stanford Impact Lab in Palo Alto; Santiago Tobon of EAFIT University in Medellín, Colombia; Benjamin Lessing of the University of Chicago; Marcelli Cipriani of Rio Grande do Sul Federal University; Suiany Silva of Ceará Federal University; Adson Amorin of São Carlos Federal University; Rosiane Rodrigues de Almeida of Fluminense Federal University; Daniel Bonilla-Calle of Ceipa Business School in Antioquia, Colombia; and Benjamin Lessing of the University of Chicago.
