International symposium brings together experts to debate immunobiology at FGV

Fundação Getulio Vargas hosted the Eighth International Symposium on Immunobiologicals, organized by Bio-Manguinhos, part of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), from May 8 to 10, 2024. The event featured debates, talks and roundtable discussions on topics such as the future of vaccine production, promising new therapies and the use of artificial intelligence to aid accurate disease diagnoses.

Paulo Figueiredo, a professor and researcher at Fundação Getulio Vargas’ Brazilian School of Public and Business Administration (FGV EBAPE), discussed “Managing innovation in human health biotechnology startups in Brazil: Evidence and lessons learned” during a panel discussion called “Immunobiological development – how to overcome the valley of death: Strategies and technologies.”

“Effective research in Brazil needs to have two characteristics: innovation, which I know you [Bio-Manguinhos/Fiocruz] have; and measures to tackle problems in our country. We can’t just copy other countries, trust that things will work out and be dependent on external solutions. We need to have our own research and ability to think. Fiocruz is an expert in this respect,” said Carlos Ivan Simonsen Leal, FGV’s president.

The event also featured the following speakers:

  • Akira Homma, senior scientific advisor, Bio-Manguinhos/Fiocruz;
  • Marcelo de Matos Ramos, acting director, Medical-Industrial Complex Department, Health Ministry;
  • Mario Santos Moreira, president, Fiocruz;
  • Maurício Zuma, director, Bio-Manguinhos/Fiocruz;
  • Socorro Gross, representative of Pan American Health Organization in Brazil

The symposium brought together professionals, researchers and biological drug development and production institutions from all over the world to share news and best practices in the field, discuss innovations and network. Over the years, renowned institutions such as the Pan American Health Organization, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and International Vaccine Institute have participated in the International Symposium on Immunobiologicals.
