Jean Monnet Center of Excellence accepting applications for free program on global governance, democracy and human rights
The 2024 edition will take place from August 7 to November 6, on Wednesdays, from 2 p.m. to 3:40 p.m., in FGV’s main building.

The Center for Global Law at Fundação Getulio Vargas’ Rio de Janeiro Law School is now accepting applications for the second edition of the “Rio School on Global Governance, Democracy and Human Rights” course. This is a free activity run by FGV’s Jean Monnet Center of Excellence, funded by the European Commission as part of the Erasmus+ Program. The 2024 edition will take place from August 7 to November 6, on Wednesdays, from 2 p.m. to 3:40 p.m., in FGV’s main building.
The Rio School on Global Governance, Democracy and Human Rights is a four-month in-person program, taught in English, with the aim of expanding knowledge about the global governance practices of international organizations, both universal and regional. Lectures will provide an understanding and critical analysis of international organizations and European Union institutions, their decision-making processes and challenges for their strategy and external action objectives in Latin America.
The FGV Center of Excellence on EU-Latin America Global Challenges is a “European Union Center of Excellence” – the highest academic title granted by the European Union as part of its Erasmus+ Program. This means that the EU authorizes FGV to run courses in the center’s different research areas: Global Regulation; Global Litigation; and Human Rights and Democracy.
The Rio School’s lectures will cover a variety of topics within the center’s main research areas, such as the emergence of the European Union as a regulatory actor, the regulatory authority of new subjects and non-state actors in the formation of the law of international organizations and their relevance to global governance. Informal and multi-level decision-making mechanisms in regional and global spheres and their impact on global regulation will be explored. The course also aims to address the promotion of the rule of law and human rights in Latin America by international organizations.
According to Professor Paula Wojcikiewicz Almeida, the coordinator of the Center for Global Law and Jean Monnet Center of Excellence, “The new course will feature an internationally renowned faculty of visiting professors and experts of different professional backgrounds and fields of knowledge, a modern curriculum, an innovative educational methodology and a carefully selected group of students. It is an unprecedented program in Latin America.”
The schedule of classes will feature high-level academics and specialists from national and international partner institutions. The course is aimed at undergraduate and graduate students, lawyers and professionals, particularly in the areas of law, international relations and the social sciences.
The professors who make up the Jean Monnet Center of Excellence seek not only to guide research on issues related to global governance and encourage new generations of professors and researchers, but also to prepare students to work in a global job market, which has a growing demand for people capable of dealing with different legal systems within a new world order.
The Rio School, coordinated by Professor Paula Wojcikiewicz Almeida of the FGV Rio de Janeiro Law School’s Jean Monnet Center of Excellence, is aligned with the center’s goal to become a focal point for studies of global governance in the European Union and South America, building on previous initiatives funded by the European Commission (the Jean Monnet Module from 2010 to 2013 and the Jean Monnet Chair from 2015 to 2019).
