Oscar Vilhena Vieira, the dean of Fundação Getulio Vargas’ Sao Paulo Law School, will be one of the speakers on a panel discussion called “Democracy and Risks – Challenges and Prospects for the Present and Future” at the 2024 Ethos 360° Conference, which will take place at the Ibirapuera Biennial Pavilion in Sao Paulo on September 18 and 19.

Alongside Arthur Mello, advocacy coordinator at the Pact for Democracy; Felipe Saboya, deputy director of the Ethos Institute; and Thaís Zschieschang, founder of Ecossistema de Impacto and co-founder of Delibera Brasil, Oscar Vilhena will share international experiences that can serve as models for analyzing the risks Brazilian democracy is going through and possible options for strengthening it.

The debate will start by analyzing the major social, political and technological transformations that democracies around the world are undergoing. From this point, the speakers will explore external and internal threats, including political polarization, disinformation and manipulation of information, the weakening of institutions and public trust, and the use of freedom of expression for hate speech.
