Lisbon conference marks end of Professor Bianor Cavalcanti’s term as IASIA president
Professor Bianor Cavalcanti, FGV’s international director and the president of the International Association of Schools and Institutes of Administration (IASIA), participated in the 2019 IASIA Conference, held at the University Institute of Lisbon (ISCTE-IUL) from July 22 to 26 in Lisbon, Portugal. The event, organized by IASIA and ISCTE-IUL, brought together professionals, academics, PhD students and young researchers in the area of public administration, as well as collaborators in other subjects from 50 countries, to discuss “Public Administration Missions and Targets for the UN Sustainable Development Goals.” There was an intense series of panel discussions, presentations and more than 13 working group meetings.
In his opening speech, Cavalcanti noted that Lisbon was the birthplace of IASIA, which was created in 1961. During the institution’s general assembly, the professor, whose term as its president was coming to an end, thanked the members of its council for their active cooperation during this period (2016-2019) and described how the next president would be elected during the conference.
A new council was then elected, which promptly met to elect IASIA’s new president. Professor Dong Qing, of the Chinese Academy of Governance, was elected by acclamation. In her acceptance speech, Qing pledged to work with everyone to achieve the aspirations of IASIA members.
During the event’s closing session, the now past president of IASIA, Professor Bianor Cavalcanti, thanked everybody for participating in the conference and said that in the last three years, IASIA had gone through a phase of constant learning and evolution, helping to spread best practices in public administration and policy, thereby strengthening the bonds of fraternity between IASIA’s member institutions across the world.
To end up, representatives of the University of South Africa (UNISA) showed a video about next year’s IASIA conference, to be held in Bela Bela, in the province of Limpopo, South Africa.
