Meeting discusses the challenges and the fight against gender and race-based political violence in Brazil

As part of its Media and Democracy Project, Fundação Getulio Vargas’s Rio de Janeiro Law School is holding a debate called “Gender and Race-Based Political Violence in Brazil: Measures to Tackle It and Challenges.” This public event will take place on May 23, at 9 a.m., in FGV’s main building in Rio de Janeiro. The meeting aims to foster broad and in-depth dialogue on how political violence is intertwined with issues of gender and race, especially in electoral contexts.

The event will bring together a diversity of voices, including experts, figures from the judiciary and politics, and representatives of social media platforms, to discuss the issue. The event will begin with a lecture by Judge Katia Junqueira of the Rio de Janeiro Regional Electoral Court, to be followed by two panel discussions.

The first panel discussion, “Gender and Race-Based Political Violence: Legislation and Challenges,” will feature experts in electoral law and public policy, who will discuss obstacles to the effective implementation of Law 14,192 of 2021. This law is key to protecting women against political violence, ensuring safer and more equal participation in the political arena.

The second panel, “Platforms’ Policies: Security and Trust,” will address digital platforms’ responsibilities in the fight against online violence. Representatives of the main digital platforms in Brazil will discuss how community policies can be improved to ensure a safe and reliable online environment during elections.
