Mother's day presents are more expensive in Brazil this year, according to IBRE

Those in Brazil wishing to give a present to their mothers on Sunday, May 11, will have to spend more than last year. On average, the 23 items selected in the products and services basket measured by the Consumer Price Index (IPC) calculated by IBRE increased by 7.33% between May 2013 and April 2014 - percentage above the 6.36 % inflation rate recorded over the same period.Among the goods that presented an increase above inflation are: Jewelry (10.70%), perfumes (7.93%), belts and handbags (7.62%), refrigerators and freezers (7.19%). Other products, though below inflation, also became more expensive: washing machines (5.58%), computers (5.44%) and photo cameras (4.66%), among others. In contrast, there was a decrease in the prices of the following items: mobile phones (-2.09%) and TV sets (-0.84%).Regarding services, there was an increase above inflation for almost all items selected, with an emphasis on theatre tickets (21.62%), musical show tickets (13.70%) and restaurants (9.17%).
