A research carried out by the Center of Entrepreneurship and New Business (GVcenn) at FGV's São Paulo School of Business Administration (EAESP) in the Northern states (Acre, Amapá, Amazonas, Pará, Rondônia, Roraima and Tocantins) shows that the residents of the region are the most entrepreneurial of the country. The rate of entrepreneurship in the region, which has 16 million inhabitants, is equivalent to 8.5% of the Brazilian population and is responsible for 5% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). According to the coordinator of EAESP's Center for Entrepreneurship and New Business, Tales Andreassi, the initial rate of entrepreneurs in the region is 17.9 %, compared to 15.4% of the Brazilian average. The expert states that the numbers of the North of the country show that the regional entrepreneurship is stimulated by impulse, rather than corporate planning and, many times, is the only chance of survival. The survey carried out by EAESP highlights that the majority of the new entrepreneurs - companies with up to 42 months of operation - are men from 35 years of age, who have completed their elementary education. Among the consolidated business, on the other hand, the highest rates are for men between 55 and 64 years old, with incomplete elementary education and with an average income of more than nine minimum wages. The study also shows that factors such as the recent regional economic growth, the ability to leverage the monthly income and the lack of formal employment are possible reasons that explain the high rates of entrepreneurship in the North of Brazil.
