Pandemic’s consequences for public policies to be debated in webinar

The pandemic has revealed that a significant segment of the population is highly vulnerable in periods of great crisis, when they may lose all their income. What policies ought there to be to protect the most vulnerable members of society when the fiscal situation greatly limits the construction of public policies? What are the expected effects in terms of growth and inequality of the expansion of welfare programs? These and other questions will be answered in a webinar called “Public Politics in Response to the Pandemic,” to be held on May 20 at 10 am by Fundação Getulio Vargas’ Brazilian Institute of Economics (IBRE) and the newspaper O Estado de S.Paulo.

The meeting is one of a series of events held to mark FGV IBRE’s 70th anniversary. The speakers will be Luís Henrique Paiva, the coordinator of social security studies at the Institute for Applied Economic Research (IPEA) and professor on the Master’s in Public Administration course at the Brazilian Institute for Education, Development and Research (IDP); Manoel Pires, an associate researcher at FGV IBRE; and Fernando Veloso, a researcher at FGV IBRE. The moderator will be O Estado de S. Paulo special reporter and columnist Adriana Fernandes.

The participants will also debate COVID-19’s second wave in Brazil, which has been even deadlier than the first, and the new emergency aid program approved by the federal government. The approved resources, amounting to R$44 billion, are allocated to cover the spending of beneficiaries for another four months, although the handouts are smaller than last year. There are doubts as to whether this funding will be enough to support the multitude of people who have lost, or will lose, their jobs and income.

The event is part of a series of debates organized by FGV IBRE and O Estado de S. Paulo, aimed at economists, financial market professionals, students and other people interested in the subject. The webinar will be broadcast on FGV’s and O Estado de S. Paulo’s YouTube channels and on FGV’s LinkedIn page.
