Possible scenarios for the Brazilian and world economy to be discussed in online seminar

Given the progress of COVID-19 vaccination and the consequent relaxation of lockdown measures, the world’s main developed countries are now expected to enjoy strong growth this year. In Brazil, the economic recovery proved slower than expected in the first quarter, as the pandemic worsened. However, several high-frequency indicators have outperformed forecasts, preventing a drop in gross domestic product between January and March of this year.

In this context, Fundação Getulio Vargas’ Brazilian Institute of Economics (FGV IBRE), which is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, will hold the Second Macroeconomic Analysis Seminar, in partnership with the newspaper O Estado de S.Paulo, on June 10, at 10 am, on their YouTube channels. The purpose is to debate likely scenarios for the Brazilian and world economy, bearing in mind that a third wave of the pandemic has not been ruled out.

According to FGV IBRE economists, April’s indicators point to better results in the second quarter. However, there is still a lot of uncertainty, given the limited supply of vaccines, the slow progress of vaccination and political tensions related to the COVID-19 parliamentary inquiry.

The event will feature Armando Castelar, the coordinator of FGV IBRE’s applied economics area; José Júlio Senna, the head of FGV IBRE’s Center for Monetary Studies; and Silvia Matos, the coordinator of IBRE’s Macro Bulletin. The moderator will be Adriana Fernandes, Estado de S. Paulo special reporter and columnist. The seminar will be broadcast on FGV’s YouTube channel.

The seminar is part of a series of debates held by FGV IBRE and O Estado de S. Paulo, aimed at economists, professionals, students and other people interested in the area.
