Post-doctoral thesis by São Paulo Law School is awarded in Canada

The post-doctoral student of FGV's São Paulo Law School (DIREITO GV), José Roberto Franco Xavier, received a Gold Medal from the Governor-General of Canada in the category Humanities. It is the most important academic award of the country, awarded annually in recognition of the theses that made contributions deemed exceptional.Xavier produced the doctoral thesis ?La Réception de l?opinion publique par le système de droit criminel? (The reception of public opinion by the criminal law system) - produced at the Social Sciences College at the University of Ottawa with the goal of trying to understand the complex relationship between the criminal justice and public opinion.The research, financed by CAPES and the Canadian Chair in Legal Traditions and Penal Rationality, had the support of Fundação Getulio Vargas through the collaboration of researchers from the Crime and Penalties Studies Center of São Paulo Law School.Back to Brazil after nine years of studies in Canada, Xavier was welcomed as the first post-doctoral student of São Paulo Law School. My project is to develop empirical research in the law field, something with little tradition in Brazil, says the researcher, who has a PhD in Criminology also by the University of Ottawa.The study was the theme of an article Research in Focus, section of São Paulo Law School's website which highlights the research produced at the School.The award ceremony will be held on November 3rd, in Ottawa.
