Report compares development trajectories of Brazil and South Korea

In August, Fundação Getulio Vargas’ International Intelligence Unit (FGV NPII) launched a report produced in partnership with the Korea Foundation, which analyzes the development trajectories and international presence of Brazil and South Korea. This document, called “Economic Development and Global Value Chain Insertion: A View from Brazilian and South Korean Lenses,” also draws some parallels between the two nations.

Researcher Leonardo Paz Neves, the report’s author, spent a year and a half compiling information about global supply chain processes and at the end obtained five policy papers on the subject, written by World Bank and IPEA officials, as well as specialists from Brazil and South Korea. “It is possible to make a comparison between the two countries and we can certainly evaluate what would be a feasible way forward for Brazil based on Asian experience – such as whether the country has to open up more, become more internationally connected or the opposite, focusing more within, as happened under previous governments,” Neves says.

The research was presented in August, when the final report was completed. “This analysis allowed us to identify distinctions between the models applied by the two countries and how such models contributed to each one’s development profile, influencing the present situation. The research also makes a direct comparison between policies and choices that have strongly influenced our present stage and how these decisions pose challenges for our country’s development,” says the FGV NPII researcher.
