Research by São Paulo Law School reveals the profile of Law professors in Brazil

The Law Education Observatory (OED) of Fundação Getulio Vargas' São Paulo Law School (DIREITO SP) has just released the second report that analyzes the profile of Law professors in Brazil. The document presents consolidated data on the undergraduate courses in Law and their professors for each state of the Federation.What draws attention to this report is the heterogeneity found within each region of the country, explained the coordinator of São Paulo Law School's Teaching Methodology Center, Marina Feferbaum. The detailed information allows a more appropriate reflection on the Brazilian legal education scenario, helping to think about its diversity and complexity, added the researcher of the Methodology Center, Guilherme Forma Klafke.Men are the majority among Law professors in the countryAccording to the survey, in the North region the majority are male Law professors with a specialist title, who described themselves as whites, with a part time job and courses offered by private schools located in the capital. In the Northeast, in most states, the majority is professors with a master's degree, and most described themselves as having brown colored skin. In addition, they work part time in courses offered in the private network, and are mostly male.In the Midwest, the majority are male professors with a master's degree, who described themselves white, with part time jobs in the private network courses at universities located inland. In the Southeast, most positions are occupied by male Law professors with a master's degree, who described themselves white and working for the private network in all states.Lastly, in the South, the majority are male professors with a master's degree in all states, who described themselves white, with part time positions. In the region, most courses are offered by the private network - with the exception of the state of Santa Catarina - and inland cities. In this region, most professors work part-time.In order to prepare this report information related to the degree of Law professors, their gender, skin color/race and geographic distribution of the courses (capital or inland) were analyzed. 40,828 positions, based on the 2012 Higher Education Census (INEP) were analyzed.Please click here to read the report and the complete data (in Portuguese).
