Rio de Janeiro Law School students present study on public transport

On November 27th, Rio de Janeiro Law School (FGV DIREITO RIO) welcomed the National President of the Consumer Protection Special Commission and the Brazilian Bar Association of Paraíba, Odon Bezerra. At the invitation of Professor Ricardo Morishita, Odon visited the school to attend the presentation of a study conducted by graduate students - represented by Haroldo Almeida Filho and Amanda Dudenhoeffer - about public transportation in Rio de Janeiro. The objective is to propose solutions to improve mobility in the city, which has one of the worst traffic issues in the country. The survey also highlights the main complaints of Rio de Janeiro users, such as improper driver behavior, lack of buses, driver's use of headsets and mobile phones, among others.During the meeting, Odon Bezerra emphasized that the public transportation problems in Rio are the same all over Brazil. Urban mobility is a problem that plagues large cities. Public transportation needs to be safe and efficient and it should also provide comfort to consumers so that they see an advantage in using it. Today, 70% to 80% of the cars drive around with one single person, he explained. The students also proposed a change in the Brazilian Traffic Code to make bus companies responsible in case of violations of traffic rules, including an impact on public service concession.OAB/PB's president committed himself to take the study to the Council of Consumer Protection to evaluate and improve the proposal.
