Rio de Janeiro Law School students visited a prison in Gericinó

A group of undergraduate students from FGV's Rio de Janeiro Law School (DIREITO RIO) visited last Friday, September 27, the Prison Esmeraldino Bandeira, in Gericinó, in the west region of Rio de Janeiro. The students currently attend the 7th to the 10th semesters, and are enrolled in the Human Rights Clinic based at the Laboratory of Legal Advice on Fundamental Rights (LADIF) of the Legal Practice Center (NPJ).The objective of the visit was to provide students with a practical experience on the operation of a prison facility. According to NPJ's Coordinator, André Mendes, the activity was optional and students joined with enthusiasm. It is an enriching experience for the educational process of students. It is necessary to create the conditions to ensure that students learn about the reality in which they are inserted, he stressed.The students were escorted by the supervisor of the Human Rights Clinic based in LADIF, Professor Celina Beatriz; by the Public Defender active at the Center for Human Rights Defense of the Public Defender's Office of the state of Rio de Janeiro (Nudedh), Carla Beatriz Nunes Maia; and by the assistant of the Legal Practice Center, Bruno Alvanisio Alves Chaves.The visit was organized by the NPJ together with Nudedh, with the authorization from the State Secretary of Penitentiary Administration (SEAP) of Rio de Janeiro state.
