São Paulo Law School discusses money laundering and jewelry market at an event in Rio
The coordinator of the Clinic of Criminal Law of São Paulo Law School (DIREITO GV), Heloísa Estellita, participated in the seminar The Jewelry Industry and Money Laundering Prevention, offered at the main office of Ajorio (Association of Jewelers and Watchmakers in Rio de Janeiro State).
Heloísa analyzed the requirements provided in the new resolution of COAF (Council of Financial Activities Control), which aims to establish procedures to prevent money laundering and terrorism financing. These demands have included, among others, the registration of jewelers in COAF and the establishment of internal policies of prevention. The professor also talked about money laundering, legislation, the impact on the activity of jewelry stores and on internal policies of money laundering prevention.
In June this year, the Brazilian Institute of Gems and Precious Metals (IBGM) and the Criminal Law Clinic at FGV's São Paulo Law School (DIREITO GV) launched a booklet to guide entrepreneurs who work in the trade of jewelry and precious stones and metals. The project received institutional support from the Board of Financial Activities Control (COAF).
