São Paulo Law School makes political reading of Macbeth
Professor of Arts and Law at FGV's São Paulo Law School, José Garcez Ghirardi, will analyze the play Macbeth on August 17 at Eva Herz Theater, at Livraria Cultura in São Paulo. Admission is free and in places will be filled by order of arrival. The meeting is part of the series Shakespeare in Love and Politics - a preparatory lecture for Pauliceia Literária, that will be held in September, in São Paulo.
In July, the professor said that the play Too Much Noise for Nothing, which tells the comings and goings of Claudio, Hero, Beatriz and Benedict, involved in the plot of D. João, who envy the affection shown by the King, D. Pedro, to Claudio.
For Garcez, it is possible to make a political reading of the play. Women represent the ideals of the Republic, in constant friction with the men, thirsty for power, lie to win them over, and lie to conquer their future wives.
The expert says that it is still possible to detect the elements that permeate the Shakespearean universe, marked by the transition from a medieval to a modern framework. This is evident in the institution of marriage, an institution marked by a collective paradigm, typical of the Middle Ages, he points out.
Unlike Romeo and Juliet (first play examined in the series in June), where the individual space is suffocated by collective agreements, in Too Much Noise for Nothing one already starts to be aware that the conventions - although they started to not make sense any more - can be used to support good causes, such as the character of Benedict used. When you use your life experience to solve the dilemma of Claudio and Hero's wedding and unmask D. João, Benedict behaved like a real king, Garcez concludes.
The event will take place in Portuguese.
