São Paulo Law School students participate in the end of the Carandiru trial

Students of the first and third year of the undergraduate and master's course of São Paulo Law School of Fundação Getulio Vargas (DIREITO SP), under the supervision of the coordinators of the Center for the Study of Crime and Sentences, Marta Machado and Maíra Rocha, participated in the last days of the trial of the military police who participated in Carandiru Massacre. The trial took place in the Plenary Session 10 of the Criminal Forum of Barra Funda, in São Paulo, last week. The Carandirú case, the greatest violation of human rights under state custody in the world, did not echoed to the reform of our institutions. Since then the situation in prisons has deteriorated - we became the 4th country that imprisons the most people in the world, with more than 500 citizens being massacred daily, living in subhuman conditions, stated Marta Machado and Maíra Rocha. For the fifth year undergraduate student and monitor of the Criminal Law course, Tomaz Aribi, the experience was remarkable. Another interesting thing was the reaction of the judge, who, when he became aware of the presence of law students, took the opportunity to explain didactically some decisions, says Tomaz, who attended the interrogation of the defendants and the witness statements with other students. The participation of students and professors resulted in an article published in the newspaper O Estado de São Paulo. In order to read it, please click here (in Portuguese).Study on the massacreThe Center for the Study of Crime and Sentences carried out a research on the case two years ago.
