Seminar addresses World Cup influence on global geopolitics

As one of the largest sporting events worldwide, the World Cup has often been used as a political tool. In the year when the tournament will be held for the first time in Russia, the Laboratory for Sports Studies (LESP) of FGV’s School of Social Sciences (CPDOC) and UFF’s Center for Contemporary Studies will host the seminar ‘World Cup politics – the history and memory of FIFA’s World Cups (1978-2018)’ on April 4 and 5.

The event will be attended by experts in the fields of geography, history, and international relations, analyzing the World Cup event organized by FIFA as a geopolitical phenomenon, framed under its institutional aspects, that underpin the strength correlations between countries in the 20th and 21st centuries.

The first day of the event will be held at FGV (Praia de Botafogo, 190, Auditorium 1014. Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro/RJ), featuring the documentary ‘Memories of lead: football in the times of the Condor’, by Lucio de Castro (Brazil, 2012, 52 min). Then there will be the panel titled ‘40 years of the 1978 Argentina World Cup: football and dictatorships in Latin America’, featuring Álvaro do Cabo (Cândido Mendes University) and Livia Magalhães (UFF), mediated by professor Américo Freire (CPDOC).

The second day of the seminar will take place at UFF (Rua Prof. Marcos Waldemar de Freitas Reis, Block O, room 1 - Graduate Auditorium of the Institute of History. Gragoatá Campus, Niterói/RJ), hosting the conference ‘The challenges of mega sporting events in the global scenario of the 21st century’, with a lecture by Gilmar Mascarenhas (UERJ) and mediation by Bernardo Buarque (CPDOC). Next, Adriano Freixo (UFF) and Maurício Santoro (UERJ) will discuss ‘The 2018 Russia World Cup: global geopolitics in question’, mediated by Livia Magalhães (UFF).
