Seminar in Malaysia discusses innovation and democratic participation

On June 25, Fundação Getulio Vargas’ Department of Public Policy Analysis (DAPP) participated in the Seminar on Innovative Citizen Participation in Restrictive Environments, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The event is organized by Supporting Democracy, a European Union-funded democracy support project, to promote examples of innovative responses to restrictive political environments.

DAPP researcher Lucas Calil discussed innovative ideas for democratic participation, including digital tools for electoral observation and accountability. In this context, Calil presented results and lessons learned from the experience gained with the Digital Democracy Room, which analyzed the last presidential elections in Brazil, last year.

In addition, methods for monitoring social networks were discussed, which comprised the main scope of the assessments carried out by the Democracy Room. The daily experience of network analysis has brought an understanding of the dissemination of content and the influence that digital media has been exerting on the elections worldwide.
