Series of events to discuss reform of Civil Code
Following the delivery of the preliminary draft of the new civil code prepared by a committee of legal experts in April of this year, FGV Justice is holding a series of seminars titled “Civil Code Reform in Focus.” The first event will take place on October 18, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Fundação Getulio Vargas Cultural Center, at 186 Praia de Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro. Free of charge and open to the public, the meeting will cover topics such as fundamental rights, the protection of personal identity, and contractual and business legal relations.
On April 17, 2024, the committee of legal experts convened by the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco, presented its draft reform bill, aimed at updating the civil code.
The confirmed speakers for the first seminar include Justice Luis Felipe Salomão of the Superior Court of Appeals, who for eight months chaired the committee of legal experts to advise on the civil code reform. He is also the coordinator of the FGV Center for Judicial Innovation, Research and Administration (FGV Justice).
The civil code regulates the entire life of citizens, permeating all fields, from interpersonal relationships to work, business, leisure, education and access to information. Government officials, academics and specialists will take part in the seminar to reflect on the proposed changes to the civil code and their potential impacts.
To discuss the progress of the reform bill, the meeting will bring together some of the members of the committee of legal experts, including Flavio Tartuce, the reform’s general rapporteur; Laura Porto, the deputy rapporteur of the Senate’s Digital Law Sub-Committee; Dierle Nunes, a member of the Digital Law Sub-Committee; and Angélica Carlini, a member of the Contracts Sub-Committee for the Civil Code Reform. Other speakers will include Laura Schertel, a professor and the coordinator of the Brazilian Institute for Education, Development and Research’s Professional Master’s in Law Program; and judges Monica Di Piero and Claudio dell’Orto of the Rio de Janeiro State Court of Appeals.
