Social Impact Report presents FGV's actions in the sustainability and green economy sector
The intersection between sustainability and the green economy has become an imperative in today’s global context. The search for development that does not jeopardize natural resources is now essential to guarantee the resilience and quality of life of present and future generations.
In this context, the key is to redefine industrial, commercial and productive practices in entire sectors, using technology, innovation and investment in applied research as tools, combined with the growing participation of society. All these vectors lie at the heart of FGV’s mission and institutional characteristics.
The experience gained from the Doce River Project, one of the most comprehensive diagnoses of environmental technological disasters ever carried out in Brazil and the world, set new international standards and opened the door to various other wide-ranging initiatives.
Based on this work, FGV is advancing as a leader for rethinking actions, policies, programs and protocols capable of uniting guarantees for human rights and environmental preservation with the development and harnessing of Brazil’s economic vocations, at national and regional levels.
Learn about some of our projects:
- Amazon Sustainable Landscapes: The second phase of the Brazilian Amazon Sustainable Landscapes Program, in which FGV participates as an executing body, aims to expand the efforts already under way to consolidate protected areas in the Amazon and to improve landscape connectivity and sustainable management.
FGV was invited by the World Bank to carry out financial management work, including procurement, contracts, accounting and financial management, and reporting, for the amounts donated by the Global Environment Facility to Amazon Sustainable Landscapes, a regional program aimed specifically at the Amazon in Brazil, Colombia and Peru. - Impacts of Deforestation in the Amazon: This research project focused on understanding the determining factors for deforestation in the Amazon, the consequences of this deforestation (mainly through effects on the climate), potential public policies that could combat it effectively, and the costs this problem generates for the agricultural and energy sectors.
The work showed that deforestation has significant implications for the Amazon Rainforest’s ability to retain carbon and a major impact on the aforementioned sectors through its effect on climate change. The authors argue that transfer programs may be a cost-effective public policy for tackling this issue. - Greenhouse Gases in Civil Aviation: Greenhouse gas emissions are currently one of the biggest dilemmas facing the civil aviation sector, generating negative externalities in relation to the environment. A paper titled “Civil Aviation Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Analysis of the Importance of Sector Action Plans” was presented at the 34th edition of the National Meeting of Undergraduate Administration Courses (ENANGRAD), which was held in Sao Paulo in 2023.
This study summarizes the actions of the National Civil Aviation Regulatory Agency (ANAC) in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions linked to the sector, highlighting the main mechanisms for this purpose, most notably an ANAC Action Plan.
